It's that time of year when drugstores and big box stores load the end caps with sunscreen, but this year I've decided to stop shopping sales and to start shopping smart. I'm not going to get into all the science (believe me, there's a ton); rather, I'm taking one of Michael Pollan's food rules, don't eat anything your great-grandmother wouldn't recognize, and applying it to my sunscreen too. The Environmental Working Group puts together a great guide each year that rates sunscreens based on all sorts of criteria so you can decide what is right for your family. Finding the right balance between cost and safety was important for me.
