Right now on my kitchen counter I have a bowl of my mom's lemons, another of overripe limes that I found on the sidewalk in my neighborhood and yet another full of tangerines that two neighborhood kids wheelbarrowed around for sale last weekend. I also know which neighbor has a tree full of meyer lemons that are free for the taking.
It makes me sad to drive through neighborhoods and see fallen fruit rotting on the ground. Not only is it a waste, but often it is a waste of the most delicious fruits from old, heirloom trees. That's why I love what the organization Fallen Fruit is doing. They map all of the fruit trees that grow in or over public spaces so that the fruit doesn't rot on the ground. There isn't a map of any of my local neighborhoods, but I'm definitely heading to Golden Gate park in San Francisco during blackberry season!
